　　Learning English just like learning to ride a bicycle. When learning English becomes a kind of habit, everything will like splitting bamboo.

　　Please, think about it, how we learned to ride a bicycle. There are four stages: At the first stage, the child doesn’t know what it is to ride a bicycle nor can he ride. This is the stage of unconscious incompetence. So look at ourselves, when we got in touch with English at the first time, we were also in this condition.

　　And then is the second stage. Although the child cannot ride himself, he grows and understands what it is to ride a bicycle. So, at this time, teachers are our navigation marks.

　　So according to this, we just like the child starts learning and now comes the third stage, which is called consciously competent. Now he can ride a bicycle but has to think every time how to do it.

　　At last, the fourth stage comes when the child has practiced consciously riding the bicycle so much that he doesn’t have to think. It becomes an automatic process. Riding bicycle becomes a kind of habit. He can talk to people and wave to others while riding. At this level we don’t need the concentration and thinking ’cause the behavior pattern has become automatic.

　　Stand here, I’m so shame to say “we”, ’cause I think my level is only at the 3rd stage. I’m just struggling for CET-6. But from now on I realize that English is not only for the test but also others. I expect to climb to the 4th stage just like the farmers who expect rich harvest.

　　Stand here, we know if we look forward to rich harvest we must have the desire to sow. And of cause if we sow potatoes, we are only going to reap potatoes, not tomatoes.

　　At the beginning I was happy to study, because it was fun in the English class. We played games, and only studied five words, sentence a time. We also learned to sing a lot of English songs. In this studying environment, I was interested in English for the first time.

　　When I was in grade two, my mother thought that I should study English formally, so she let me study in the class of teacher Ye of Young Palace of Beijing. In her class I began to learn the New Concept English and touched the grammar for the first time. Teacher Ye let us practice the oral English, listening and writing. Although I should remember much more words than before and had to practice listening and writing every day, and must take the crowded bus to school for two hours every week, I was very happy because I could learn much knowledge that not taught in school.

　　With my mother and teacher’s encouragement and teaching, I studied very hard and won many prize in the competition. When I was in grade four, I passed PETS 1 with the score of 88 of writing, and 5 of oral English, and I passed PETS 2 in grade five. But this is just what we lack.

　　More often than not I found some of the students who get high marks in their exams showed an inability to communicate with people in English. And this enabled me to understand deeper what my first English teacher has always emphasized: listening and speaking keeping ahead; reading and writing following up. I believe this is the rule of learning a language because we learn a certain language to communicate. 　　I found that my way of learning English that I formed from middle school still works today. By listening to tapes and imitating the speakers one can improve his pronunciation within a short time. By reciting classic essays one can enrich their language as well as enlarge their vocabulary. As a non-English major, I like to set aside a certain period of time for English learning everyday, usually an hour or at least half an hour. I utilize this precious time by listening to tapes and imitating their content and then reciting the short passages I like. To be frank, “Crazy English” has always been my favorite. This is definitely not intended to flatter. Instead of dividing my attention between too many materials, I’d rather concentrate on one particular resource at a time such as CE, not only because of its abundant content and native English, but also because of the benefits it has brought to me through intensive reading, listening and reciting, I believe that studying English by using these intensive methods will help you to get twice the result with half the effort.

　　Three mirrors reflect the way I learn English After I came back from the “21st century-Ericsson cup”7th national English Speaking competition with the award of the “Most Promising Speaker”, people kept asking me the same question over and over again. “How did you learn English, especially as a Non-English major?” Actually I believe that a hundred people would have a hundred of ways to learn English well. However, I would like to share my personal experience of English learning with those who have the enthusiasm for improve their English. Since I have set up three mirrors in my prepared speech in hoping that they would guide our young generation on the way to globalization, I would like to maintain three mirrors here to reflect how I learned English.

　　The first mirror, I assume, should reflect a steady foundation. This involves my first few years of English learning, which I consider as the key factor of all my achievements in the years to follow. At that time I entered the middle school attached to Xi’an Jiaoton University, I could only say my ABCs while others in my class could at least communicate in simple English. All the tales about the frightfulness of learning English then popped up in my mind and made me feel scared. Fortunately my first English teacher was very experienced in enlightening her students on English learning. She was a kind woman with a charming smile. But her homework assignments were not easy task: They required us to read after the tape for 20 times and recite the whole text. So it was quite natural that most of my classmates only recited the short essay within a short time and then went to play. But my fear of not being able to say a single word, made me sit down and immerse myself in what the teacher had asked me to do.

But to my great surprise, my teacher praised me for my pronunciation. And I did not realize that this little prize given by my teacher began to influence my English learning magically.

　　Now i know , if i want to study english well , textbooks are not enough for me , because the world is full of new information。reading more out of class becomes so necessary. however , the most important thing is to speak english as much as i can.。just as my english teacher , miss zhang ,always says,"we learn english to communicate , to get closer to the world."
